For ten days, we see Lord Ganesha in different forms. From the moment we leave home in the morning until we reach our workplace, we come across beautifully decorated mandaps and pandals where devotees welcome Ganpati Bappa with love and faith.

Lord Ganesha holds a very special place in Hindu tradition. He is known as Pratham Pujya, the first deity to be worshipped before beginning an important task, and Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. His blessings are traditionally sought for wisdom, auspicious beginnings, success, and the removal of difficulties.

But behind the divine form of Lord Ganesha are many fascinating stories, each carrying a deeper message for our lives.

One such lesser-known and inspiring story is the story of Lord Ganesha and Maharishi Ved Vyasa, associated with the writing of the great epic, the Mahabharata.

Why Did Ved Vyasa Need Lord Ganesha?

According to the traditional account, Maharishi Ved Vyasa wanted to compose the Mahabharata, one of the greatest epics of Indian tradition. The epic contains stories of family, duty, relationships, morality, philosophy, human choices, and the consequences of our actions.

But Ved Vyasa needed someone who could write down the verses as he narrated them.

The task was not simple. The Mahabharata was an enormous work, and Ved Vyasa needed a writer who could maintain the required pace and concentration.

Eventually, Narada Muni suggested that Ved Vyasa approach Lord Ganesha.

Ved Vyasa went to Lord Ganesha and requested Him to write the Mahabharata.

Lord Ganesha agreed, but He placed one important condition.

He said that he would write the epic, but Ved Vyasa would have to continue narrating without stopping. If Ved Vyasa stopped, Lord Ganesha would stop writing.

This was a challenging condition.

However, Ved Vyasa also placed a condition of his own. He requested Lord Ganesha to understand every verse completely before writing it down.

Lord Ganesha agreed.

And so, the great work began.

Lord Ganesha's Broken Writing Instrument

Ved Vyasa began narrating the verses, and Lord Ganesha began writing them down.

The process continued without interruption.

Then something unexpected happened.

Lord Ganesha's writing instrument broke.

At that moment, He could have stopped the work. After all, the instrument He was using was no longer available.

But Lord Ganesha did not allow the obstacle to stop Him.

He broke one of His own tusks and immediately began using it as a writing instrument.

This traditional story is associated with Lord Ganesha's name Ekadanta, meaning “the One-Tusked Lord.”

This simple but powerful moment carries a profound message.

When you are committed to your purpose, an obstacle should become a reason to find another way not a reason to give up.
